Lockport Gallery at the Illinois State Museum

The Lockport Gallery┬áis located in the Norton Building on West 10th Street in Lockport. It’s a branch of the Illinois State Museum and exhibits the artwork of distinguished Illinois residents.

You can browse the contemporary sculptures and paintings of local dignitaries such as poet Sam Love and photographer Patty Ratzel. Each exhibit is augmented by thematically appropriate items. The “Rocked & Rolled” exhibit, for instance, features geological specimens from the famous Geology Collection at the Illinois State Museum.

The exhibit also covers the work of contemporary and past artists, set against popular music from the past 50 years. If you haven’t yet visited Lockport Gallery, be sure to include it on your must-visit list.

Joliet Area Historical Museum

If you enjoy exploring historical sites, the Joliet Area Historical Museum is for you. Housed in the former Ottawa Street Methodist Church building, it was opened to the public in 2002.

It’s also partially interactive in nature, with a Lunar Lander Simulator on-site. If you visit soon, you’ll be able to catch the “Art From the Ashes” exhibit, featuring the work of Old Joliet Prison Burned District artists. This temporary exhibit will be available through December 2019.

For a fun treat, check out the “Classical Blast!” holiday concert on December 6th. Then, you’ll hear holiday songs set to classic rock rhythms.

Slovenian Heritage Museum

In 1983, the Slovenian Women’s Union set up the Slovenian Heritage Museum to preserve the Slovenian cultural legacy in the region. This historic building contains many artifacts pertaining to the Slovenian experience including dolls, family photos, ancestral keepsakes, and clothing.

Rare books and prized memorabilia also feature prominently. The Women’s Union is a volunteer-run organization that’s dedicated to preserving the Slovenian heritage through education, communication, and cultural events.
