If you’d like to get outside, breathe in the fresh air, and get some exercise, spend a day exploring all that nature has to offer. These three Crest Hill nature preserves have everything from grassy hills and prairie preserves to wetlands. Hit the trails and enjoy your favorite activities in the great outdoors. The best part is, these preserves are all located near our apartments in Crest Hill, so you don’t have to travel far.
Prairie Bluff Preserve
The Prairie Bluff Preserve protects wetland habitats and offers numerous activities year-round. You can spend a summer day biking, hiking, running, or picnicking on 3.21 miles of paved trail. Or, if winter is more your season, you can try cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. To get involved in their conservation programs, you can donate or volunteer.
Theodore Marsh provides access to many trails that offer a wide array of different activities. Check out the Rock Run Greenway trail, an 11.24-mile paved trail, or the shorter Joliet Junction trail. These allow for hiking, biking, in-line skating, and skiing. In addition to walking trails, Theodore Marsh features a fun playground as well as geocaching opportunities.
Teale Woods Preserve
Named after naturalist Edwin Way Teale, this preserve works to conserve its historic land. It is part of the Des Plaines River preservation system that maintains more than 2,400 acres of woods. While you walk or bike along the trails, keep your eyes peeled for birds and other small creatures as wildlife sightings are common. If you are passionate about their preservation efforts, you can donate or volunteer.
