Visit the Gaylord Building, the Gateway to the National Heritage Corridor

An awesome, fiery, and multi-colored scenic display from the many varieties of deciduous trees lining the banks of a canal near the Gaylord Building.

The Gaylord Building, near The Woodlands of Crest Hill, once stored canal construction materials. When you visit this historic site, you can walk along the canals and see why this building was a key resource during the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Today, the Gaylord Buiding is the gateway to the Illinois and Michigan National Heritage Corridor.

About the Illinois and Michigan Canal

In 1836, construction began on the Illinois and Michigan canal. However, it was a challenging project that proceeded slowly, due to supplies only being available in small quantities. The commissioners saw the need for a storage area so supplies could be stored in bulk nearby. As a result, the Gaylord Building was built and Lockport soon became a thriving city.

Today, you can view the many exhibits that tell the history of the canals and the Gaylord Building. There are three floors of exhibits, with the second and third floors featuring the works of both local and international artists.

Participate in Special Events in Historic Lockport

Look out for the Lockport Old Canal Days Craft and Art Fair in June. There’ll be food trucks, live music, a wine tent, and a beer garden. Meanwhile, the Lockport Classic Car Show & Food Court will feature a farmers market and live bands from June through August. The city of Lockport also hosts the largest WWII-era re-enactment in the region, so you’ll want to keep a lookout for that as well.

Finally, you’ll want to drop in at the Public Landing restaurant, where you can sit at a quiet table and enjoy a delightful meal. The restaurant itself is housed in the historic Gaylord Building. Today, it’s an extremely popular location for bridal showers and wedding receptions.

The Gaylord Building also hosts other special events on site. You may enjoy the Afro-Contemporary dance classes or its summer artist-in-residence program with the Red Clay Dance Company.
