Grab your binoculars and some snacks and head to the Heron Rookery Nature Preserve for a peaceful day of bird-watching. The Heron Rookery Nature Preserve is just eleven minutes from Woodlands of Crest Hill Apartments. This hotspot for birds is known as one of the premier rookeries in northern Illinois. Here you’ll find egrets, cormorants, herons, and more.

Thousands of people visit every year to see the wildlife. Here are some more populous species you may see on a trip to the rookery.

American White Pelican

American White Pelicans are one of the largest bird species in North America. They are a truly majestic sight when soaring through the air. These waterbirds are easily identified as they feature long necks, massive bills, and snowy white body feathers. Black flight feathers are visible when they spread their wings. Birdwatchers may spot these pelicans at the edge of Lake Renwick where they stick their beaks into the water in search of fish.

Purple Martin

Purple Martins are appropriately named as they display iridescent dark blue-purple feathers. These birds are fast and are know to catch their prey in mid-air. You may see them feasting on dragonflies and mosquitoes. Purple Martins are the largest of the swallow species. They entertain birdwatchers with their joyful, throaty chirps.

Great Horned Owl

Known as the quintessential owl of storybooks, Great Horned Owls are powerful predators that can capture birds and mammals larger than themselves. At dusk, they may be spotted sitting on tree limbs or fence posts. They feature mottled gray-brown body feathers and reddish-brown faces. Their feathers are extremely soft which helps provide insulation against the frigid winter temperatures.

The Heron Rookery Nature Preserve is just one of the many beautiful preserves in our area.
