Did you know that the first movie theater in the United States opened in 1896? Named Vitascope Hall, visitors paid ten cents to see a movie with little skits that usually included a fight scene. Now, of course, there are multiple theatres in nearly every town in the country! Here are three of the best movies theatres near Crest Hill in the neighborhoods around The Woodlands of Crest Hill Apartments. The first two are local institutions that have been part of the community for decades.
The Mar Theatre
The Mar Theatre opened its doors in 1937. At the time, it’s engineering was considered state-of-the-art as the main structure was riveted structural steel with masonry and plaster walls. It even had a heating and cooling system! Much of the theatre remains as it was in the late 1930s, and the original auditorium seats up to three hundred moviegoers. It shows new Hollywood releases and offers reasonably priced concessions.
Glen Art Theatre
Not long after opening in the mid-1920s, the Glen Art Theatre became a staple of downtown Glen Ellyn. In 1986, the theatre was featured in the movie Lucas starring Charlie Sheen and Corey Haim, and when it hosted the Midwest premiere, area residents showed up for the occasion in their finest clothing. The staff is friendly, and moviegoers can munch on buttery popcorn while watching the latest Hollywood blockbusters.
Marcus Orland Park Cinema
Ben Marcus established the Marcus Corporation in 1935 with the founding of a single theater in Ripon, Wisconsin. Little did he know that it would become one of the nation’s leading entertainment companies with 700 screens in seven states. The theaters offer stadium seating and the latest in sound technology, as well as innovative food and beverage options. The best time to visit is on Tuesdays when all films are just five dollars.
